Comments:  I received the Audio CD's and pin today.  I listened to the CD's and a few hit home.

After reading the after action report of TET 1968 and now hearing the CD, I was totally impressed by the actions of the 377th Security Police Squadron.

I was in the air headed home, when the attack happened.  While I was there I took the security police for granted.   I saw them on base or on the flightline but did not realize what they did while I was asleep.  Because of them I could sleep at night.

I need to thank them for protecting us while we were there.

Thank you is not enough.

I want to thank God for their presense and remember their fallen comrads.  May they rest in peace.

Thank you for sending the CD's and pin.  I will wear the pin proudly on my Vietnam Vet cap because I am proud to be a Vietnam Veteran and to have served my country.

WELCOME HOME BROTHER,

Edward Kutan

FROM THE WEB MASTER:  Edward, thank you for the kind words above.  I would like for you to also know that it was not just the security policemen.  We had many augmentee's working along side us, that came from various units on post.  We also had many men, like Dave Koopman, who picked up their M-16 rifles and went to the perimeter fencing near their barracks to help defend Tan Son Nhut.

Then on post, we had the U.S. Army, 120th Attack Helicopter Company, who flew the "Razorbacks."  The 3/4 CAV, 25th Inf Div came to TSN with their heavy tanks, APC's and other armour, to help defend TSN.  The Vietnamese soldiers who were on the flight line waiting to fly north and were diverted to help defend TSN.

There are many more men and units involved but it took all of us to defend against six battalion, of the enemy.

Comments:  Good morning, I received an email from another TSNA Member and he advised that Walter Reed would no longer accept cards and letters marked for "A Recovering American Soldier".   Below is the information off the Walter Reed website.  I suppose it is my fault for not checking this out a little better prior to trying to do something nice for those that have served this county.

What makes me really upset is the fact that the Postal Department can dump "junk" main in my personnel mailbox addresses to the "current resident" and when you ask them not to deliverer the stuff, they will tell you by law they have to.

Please pull the message and I'm sorry about the confusion and the time it will take you to correct it.

Thanks,

Thanks!

Holiday Cards to Wounded and Recovering Soldiers.

Walter Reed Army Medical Center cannot accept packages, letters, and holiday cards addressed to 'Any Wounded Soldier' or 'A Recovering American Soldier'.  p;The U.S. Postal Service is no longer accepting "Any Service Member" or "A Recovering American Soldier" letters or packages.  Mail to "Any Service Member" that is deposited into a collection box will not be delivered.

However, through a unique partnership between the American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes Inc., communities across America are invited to mail cards along with personal messages of support to wounded service members at military hospitals around the country.

With the support of the U.S. Department of Defense and Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and with help from Pitney Bowes Government Solutions, the American Red Cross will collect, review and distribute holiday greeting cards to wounded military personnel.  For security reasons, the Red Cross will be able to accept only holiday cards but not packages.  Red Cross volunteers will receive and bundle the cards, which will be shipped by Pitney Bowes Government Solutions.  Then, Red Cross volunteers at the medical facilities will distribute the cards throughout the holiday season.

Came across your site and proceeded down memory lane.

I've been looking for Paul Autoslief, for several years with no luck.  He arrived a few months before I left.  I remember very few names.  Paul visited with me and my folks in Kentucky, back in 1971.

Comments:  I just returned from my first Vietnam Security Police Association Reunion.

It was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  On Tuesday, October 16th, 26 former 377th members in the VSPA got to stand in formation with the present members of the 377th Security Forces Squadron at Kirtland AB.  What a thrill!

After 40 years, it was a true honor to stand in front of our VSPA comrades as part of a unit with a long and honorable history.  I’m not sure who got the biggest “charge” from the event.  Those young men in their BDU’s, some with 2 Iraq tours, treated us like we were “living legends”.

It was hard to figure out what our fathers were getting at when they joined the VFW and the American Legion.  Now I know.   For those of you that haven’t attended any type of reunion of your former comrades, it’s not too late.  There’s only so many years left before your opportunity passes.

I’d like to see some information about the 377th Reunion in Tampa next year on the 377th website if that’s possible.  I plan on attending and hope to see some of the guys I’ve missed for the past 4 decades.

Thanks,

I'd appriciate any information about the 377th SPS and the personnel.

We missed the big "Tet Offensive" in January of 1968, but had a small intrusion attempt in May of 1968 through the Delta Sector.

I have a plaque from that time with the names of all the Delta Sector members during that time if you want that information.

It would be great to be able to connect with some of these people through this web site.

I was there in 1966-1967.  I worked a little known gate to the side of the civilian air terminal, know as the civilian air termininal gate, imagine that, Bravo Sector.

I went through the Dec 1966 Attack on Tan Son Nhut along with Kevin Fitzgerald, Jr., Arrant, and many others I can't recall.  I was fortunate enough to get out of there before the TET Offensive, those of you that went through it, "Welcome Home and Welcome Home to all Survivors.

I came home to McCoy AFB, Orlando , Florida and was overseer to an XR71 and two U2's.  The base was a SAC base and I was assigned to SAC security but those birds were my assignment, secret and not talking about them at the time.

Anyway, I plan to attend your reunion in Tampa Florida, in February.  Hope to meet a lot of you I have never met, maybe find an old friend or two, and in general, just have a good time with good guys.

So until then, you all take care.

I remember the night Dec 4-5, 1966 when Tan Son Nhut got hit.   Also when the VNAF Skyraider went down, my section had just returned from convoy duty, we were first on scene.  I cannot forget to this day the tragedy that took place.  We were located next to Camp Alpha and the Capitol Army Aviation unit.

I often think of the guys of the 377th Security Police Squadron who lost ther lives that Dec 1966.  I was transfered to an Infantry unit in Tuy Hoa 3rd BN, 12th Inf and finished out my tour.  Returned to the Nam in June 1968 for another tour with the 173rd ABN Bde.

I do have some pictures of them.

Your Friend,

Buck Buchanan (Tiger Flight)

FROM THE WEB MASTER:  James, the reason I wanted to identify any of the five men.  A gentleman bought a Vietnam photo album and these photographs were inside them.

The gentleman wanted to see if I could return them to someone in the album as they were important to someone stationed there.

I will send you a private email.

Comments:  I just found the web site and read the posted emails but didn’t recognize any names.  I am originally from Philly, and I was at Tan Son Nhut from July 1969 to July 70.   I can remember walking the F-4C, C-130 and C-123 revetments in "Charlie Sector" and manning the post/bunkers out in Alpha Bravo and Echo.

I remember MSgt Eugene Dockwiler stopping at my post one time and we talked and he said that he was looking for someone to be a comm/plotter.  I had no idea what it was, but I told him I could walk on water if I had to (I was already standing in it up to the middle of my boots) and did my last six months in CSC and JDOC.

I am trying to remember more names, but that was 36 years ago.  Any body out there?

Thanks,

Comments:  Hi guys, I was assigned to the 377th Security Police Squadron, in July 1969 through July 1970.  And I know that this was 36 years ago, but didn’t Richard Nixon arrive at Tan Son Nhut and the unit receive the Presidential unit citation for the security provided.  Also was not the unit awarded the American Expendituary Award, or something similar, I am not sure of the accurate title of the unit award either at that point or even earlier?  Does anybody have any recollection or any paperwork that might support that?

Thanks guys, to anybody out there or even still alive, please contact me.

I worked Base Police (Charlie Flight I believe) and worked various cantonment areas around the base as an entry controller, including the 7th AF Hq compound and also the General officers residence compound.

Comments:  Several videos about Tan Son Nhut and Vietnam are on You Tube.

Many are done by “Frank” (You Tube screen name borntowander).  Frank makes excellent use of current Google Earth imagery, then superimposes a circa 1970’s picture on that Google Earth image.

For example, you see where Davis Station used to be on the Google imagery, then Frank superimposes a picture of the compound so you see what it looked like in 1970.

Interesting use of the old and the new to tell a story.  He also has current video.  It’s at this link:    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Es0eBxE0Dmw

Frank has posted 73 videos about Vietnam on You Tube, many in a series he calls Déjà vu Vietnam.

Comments:  The following is redacted from the Air Force Times:

Vietnam Veterans Memorial opens online

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, one of the most visited sites in the nation's capital since its opening in 1982, has gone virtual.

The memorial is now posted on the Internet with a searchable database of National Archives files that provides more than just the names of the 58,000 veterans whose names are etched in black marble on "the Wall," located near the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall.

The "virtual wall," with features that include allowing visitors to post photographs and comments, was produced by a for-profit company, Footnote.com, under an agreement with the National Archives, which keeps the military's historical records and photographs and makes them available to researchers and other visitors at an archives facility in College Park, Md.

Justin Schroepfer, Footnote.com's marketing director, said access to the virtual Vietnam Veterans Memorial  http://go.footnote.com/thewall and to linked historical records and photographs is free, but people will have to pay to use some features on the Web site.

Allen Weinstein, Archivist of the United States, said the Vietnam Memorial is one of the most visited sites not only in Washington but in the nation, and interest increases each year among people seeking to look at historical files of the war held by the National Archives.  Putting the Vietnam memorial on the Internet, and providing ways to search by name, age, hometown, state, service, unit and other factors, makes the records available to even more people, Weinstein said.

James Hastings, the Archives' director of access programs, said he is not troubled about having a for-profit company use government-owned records because the information is available for free to archives offices, which are scattered throughout the U.S.

Putting the information online "expands access by incalculable magnitude," he said.  For example, the Web site will soon include Vietnam War photographs in the Archives' possession that include captions identifying who is in the photo, making it easier to locate a photo of a particular person that might have been almost impossible for a family to find on its own.

Schroepfer said the interactive feature allowing photographs and comments to be posted by visitors will be a big draw to the Web site.  Comments will not be reviewed before they are posted, he said, but the Web site requires registration to post a comment, and other visitors can "flag" comments they think are inappropriate.

In that sense, he said, the site "polices itself."

Registering also gives visitors the opportunity to exchange comments, such as allowing families to contact someone who served with one of the service members whose name is on the Wall.

TSGT JIMMIE DURHAM, VSPA LIFE MEMBER # 267
PHOTO TAKEN 1966 ~ TSN RVN
PASSED AWAY FEBRUARY 22, 2008
REST IN PEACE

Today is February 23, 2008.  I received a message yesterday from a Vietnam Vet of the 377th Air Police Sqdn.  It reads as follows:

“Joe, Jimmie died this afternoon at 3:15pm.”

Except for one person I have sent this message to I believe that you either knew him or at least served with him.  He was a Supervisor at TSN during 1966 – 1967.  Ordinarily, I get the message that yet another of us has passed away for one reason or another.  Ordinarily, I just say a prayer and remember (if I can) who they were and what they were to me.  But the departure of SSGT Durham is a little different because I got to know him again, ever so slightly, just recently.

I have a habit of every once in a while checking through the “Guard mount” list of the VSPA.  In early January I came across the email address for Jimmie along with an email address for SSGT Billie Dexter.  I happened to have photos of both these men at lighter times in our barracks area and thought they might like a copy of them.  That started a flurry of email between the three of us.  It also caused several phone calls between Jimmie, his wife Tina and me.

Jimmie has been undergoing treatment at the VA Hospital in Nashville TN for physical ailments that were directly attributed to Agent Orange (and don’t we all remember the “Ranch Hand” group?) … I shall not go into detail of his problems which were many.  Just know that this man was more concerned that I and all of you stationed there at TSN get a regular Colon check up to catch any cancers early on.  He was more concerned for my health than his own (translates into a true leader).  As he approached his last surgery he was as confident of success as any one could be.   I truly believed that he would survive and be ready for a visit this spring when Carol and I hope to be able to travel again.

Billie Dexter has been his friend for years and I have that knowledge to make this a little less painful.  At least he did not die alone.  I am asking nothing of you, except perhaps to take a minute and reflect on our time together and always remember our troops and our Veterans as they are us.

Jim’s wife Tina called me early yesterday morning to tell me that Jim did not have long to live but the family was planning a celebration of his life in the very near future.  She really caught me off guard as I thought she was going to give me a positive update on his recovery.

If you have a recollection of Jimmie’s life and times to share I am sure that she and the family would appreciate a note.  (Please send the email to Joe McNeil's email above.)

I have missed the opportunity to spend some more time with one of our own and for that I will be forever sorry.

Stay safe and God Bless,

Proud to have served!!!

Osan Air Base, Korea.  Home of 7th Air Force Headquarters and the 51st Security Forces Squdron.

Recently they had an official ceremony pertaining to the 40th Anniversay of Tet 1968.

Jan 31, 1968 and Jan 31, 2008 are brothers and sisters in service to their country.

Please go to URL:    http://www.osan.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123084612  to read a wonderful one page story about the ceremony.

One of Tan Son Nhut Association Members, Larry Blades, has a son stationed with the 51st SFS.  His name is Zachary Blades.  During the ceremony, he requested to carry the American Flag, in honor of his father, Larry.

Please go to URL:    http://www.osan.af.mil/shared/media/photodb/photos/080131-F-9165S-003.jpg  to see Zach performing his duties with the flag.  The flag is obscuring Zach's face but that is him and we could not be more proud.

The photograph that is on the wall in the ceremony is Bunker Hill-10, Bien Hoa Air Base.  Bien Hoa, 3rd Security Police Squadron, lost two of their men during TET 1968.

Comments:  377th Security Police Squadron Web pages are awesome.  THANK YOU!!

I was at Tan Son Nhut March 1971 to March 1972.  I worked "B Flight Security."   The flight line and towers.  We took the 1 hit, which was weird.  The base siren went off, which meant to just take cover.  Then our squadron siren went off, which meant a possible ground attack so we had to completely deploy.

I wasn't in Weapons, but they came into the squadron area short one person (it was my flights V-100 "Death") and I climb up and hunkered down in the back.  Scared as hell.  Fortunately, it was only the rocket attack without a ground attack.  The squadron guy just freaked out when the base siren blared and signaled us out.

I have numerous pictures of the area that I need to get scanned.  Just lazy.

Thanks,

Comments:  I am sitting in my office viewing for the umpteenth time a copy of the Air Force News, dated Dec 09, 1966.  On the cover is a picture of two 377th Security Policemen.   A2C Robert B. Kane, and AB Alvin W. Curie from Grand Rapids Mi.

I was from Ohio then, born and raised there, but now reside in southern Michigan.

I look at the picture of Curie and remember him so well even though he was in a different sector, "C Sector," I think.  I was in a single man bunker that night just down from him and Kane.  I was in "B Sector."

I will never forget that night and the explosions that seemed to go on forever and it was warm that night.  I got the chills just waiting and watching the flightline and praying to see the daylight and for the planes to keep dropping flares.  I could hear Curie's machine gun down the line, as they were firing on the VC that had broke through to the fighters.

Curie fired the M-60 that night and killed 13 VC that night.  I remember watching him later as we gathered for guardmount at the armory, he didn't really look like a hero but then what do hero's really look like.

Later, we stood in an official ceremony for the defense the 377th Security Police did during the attack.  Curie was promoted to what rank I can't remember now and awarded medals for his heroism of stopping the enemy from doing immense damage to the aircraft and killing more of our troops.

It seems we stood for hours that day as speeches were made and medals were given out to the men who were on the main line of resistance, espically to the K-9 handler and to "Nemo the wonder dog," hero of the night.

But the toll of that night took its toll on Alvin and reminded me of the movie I saw of the the Indian, Ira Hayes.  That night wasn't anything like Iwo Jima but the toll of taking lives seem to have an ill effect on Alvin and he began to drink more heavily.  Within 6 months after the Dec 4, 1966 attack, they were putting Alvin on a plane, busted down again to no stripes and sent back to the states.

I often wondered what happened to him and tried this year to contact some of the Curie's in Grand Rapids, MI., to find out where Alvin is buried, after reading on your site he had died.

I had no luck contacting anyone there but would like to take a drive there and just visit his grave to honor once again the young boy that I looked up to that night as a real hero and the only one I ever personally met and will never forget.

Not all the hero's died on the battlefield, some has to live with themselves and what happened in Vietnam, for years and some never get over it.

I honor AB Alvin W. Curie today and never let his heroism die as long as l am alive.  I tell my four sons the story and my eleven grandchildren.

The congregation I now pastor, share our story with tears, as I have now in my eyes, of the necessity of war at times and the horror of it also.

God bless our troops in harm's way today and God bless America.

There was a incident that happened approximately the first three months I was there, Mar, Apr, May?, not really certain, just remember I was sorta new in-country.

I remember several of us formed a perimeter at the main gate/Saigon, I remember taking cover behind, I believe a jeep with an M-16, but for some reason my memory evades me after that.  Do any of the other members remember that incident?  Another thing, for some reason I have no recall of what a 122mm rocket impact sounds like, would like some helpful info.

Sgt Larry Blades
377th Security Police Squadron
Echo Sector
TSN Air Base
Nov 1967  - Nov 1968

Larry was one of nearly nine (900) security policemen to help defend TSN during TET 1968.

Larry has a son that is currently serving in the US Air Force with the 51st Security Forces Osan, Korea

His name is SSgt Zachary Blades and upon arriving with the 51st SFS, he learned that the squadron has a conference room named, "Bunker 51."   Inside this conference room is memorbilia of the 377th SPS and TET Offensive 1968.

Today, Jan 31, 2008 is the 40th Anniversay of TET 1968 and the 51st SFS is conducting an official ceremony of the event.

SSgt Blades is part of the "Honor Guard," presenting the American Flag.  The ceremony is being conducted inside the base theater and the entire squadron will be there and shown on the big screen, will be the "Attacks On Tan Son Nhut DVD," that Charles Penley provided for them and sells from his 377th SPS web page.  The 51st SFS is going to play "Taps" and the National Anthem while the DVD is playing.  We will do a roll call and call the names of the men who were killed.  When we do, the Lt in the back will respond, "Absent sir," after each name.

The information on the attack will be briefed, and there will be a 21 gun salute.  The chaplain will do a prayer and the honor guard will present the colors.  We have conducted a practice ceremony.  The ceremony is going to be great.

To the 51st Security Forces Squadron, we want to "Thank You" and we give you a, "Hand salute!"

Comments:  My name is Sgt Jim Newman, I am looking for a Security Policeman that was guarding a secure, fenced-in area, close to the Enlisted Men's Club, Post Office and basketball court, in 1967.

I was walking down the street and I saw a van coming toward me without a driver.  I managed to get in and stop the van and heard a cry for help.  So I rushed over and it was several Vietnamese men attacking the Security Policeman. So I ran to help him.  I didn't know why they were attacking him but I knew I needed to help because I thought they were going to kill him.   We finally got control and QC Vietnamese MP's came and said they would take me away the the 377th Security Police in charge, took me to their headquarters.

This a a memory that keeps going over in my mind and it will not go away, wondering if this guard made it out of there or not.

I had been in country a while and one day I was standing on the landing, Building 1319, upstairs, and low and behold there comes Chris walking down the middle of the cantonment area.  We had a good visit.  Our schedules were such that we didn't do much together and I knew he was having some health issues.  I see you list him as being in country about seven months.  I never saw him again after I left Viet Nam.

I remember so many guys that aren't on your list.  "One Shot Keesling", Holmberg, Meyer, Terry Doss, Mitchell, Vaughn, Moffett from California, Sgt. Soap, Sgt. Auer, Sgt. Snooks from Hawaii, Bollinger, (one of the funniest guys I've ever known), Wadsworth, Tillary, (that guy probably made 50,000 dollars while he was over there), the list could go on.  I remember two guys that were in our Flight but went on town patrol with the 716th MP's, Turner and Patton.

It's funny how the mind loses some of it's clarity over time.  Yet, time I spent in Viet Nam is as clear to me today as it was then.  Because of moments.  Sacred moments spent in the company of people that were in and then out of your life, seemingly forever.  Of all the people I was in the military with, I did a four year hitch from 1970 - 1974.  I have only run in to two guys I was in Viet Nam with.  Wadsworth was from Florida and I was from Tennessee, we met in a shopping mall in Tucson, Arizona!  The other guy was my friend and running buddy.  We bedizened some of the bars in Saigon.  I settled in California and ran into Meyer, from Oregon, working here not a mile from me.  He was very aloof.  I suggested we get together.  He wanted nothing to do with me.  I never saw him again.  I have often thought about him and why he reacted that way.

Well enough, I hope you found this interesting.  I love your sight and hope you might put me on the list.

Thank you and keep up the good work!
